Challaween Bread Recipe

Happy CHALLAween!

Most Halloweens I collect so much candy that I often can’t finish it all before it goes stale or I simply lose interest. Luckily I discovered a way to repurpose the sweets in Challah bread. Here’s how you can start a new ritual with your leftover Halloween candy:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • 1 tbsp yeast

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 3 cups flour + extra for counter top

  • 1 tsp salt

  • Gallon zip lock

  • Left over Halloween candy

  • Egg wash

  • Desired toppings

Directions:

  1. Dissolve 1/4 cup sugar in 1 cup warm water

  2. Add 1 tbsp yeast and let it “bloom” for a minute or two

  3. Add 1 egg & 2 tbsp vegetable oil, mix gently

  4. Add 3 cups flour and 1 tsp salt and mix until well combined

  5. Form dough into a (slightly sticky) dough ball and place in a plastic bag

  6. Let the dough rise in a warm place for at least an hour and no longer than 4 hours

  7. Chop up all your candy

  8. Flour your countertop and turn the dough out onto it

  9. Divide the dough in half and evenly cut each half into three pieces

  10. Roll out each piece to make a snake shape

  11. Flatten out the rope gently with your hands

  12. Lay candy pieces inside each flattened rope

  13. Pinch the flattened rope back together to trap the candy bits inside and roll the dough gently into a rope again

  14. Braid challah and place it on a greased baking pan

  15. Preheat oven to 350 F as dough rises a little more

  16. Brush egg wash and top with any toppings you desire

  17. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes

  18. Enjoy!

Note: If you decide to make 1 giant loaf instead of 2 you’ll have to bake it for longer

Dietitian tip: If you want to make it more filling spread peanut butter onto a slice to add protein!
